LAUNCH A CONVERSATION THAT MATTERS ON YOUR CAMPUS.

Up to Us invites you to join campus leaders across the nation in a conversation exploring how we build a sustainable economic and fiscal future.

To many young Americans, the national debt may seem like an abstract concern. In an era of quickly growing debt and political polarization, the country’s national debt is consistently placed on the back burner by our political leaders on both sides of the aisle. But our generation actually has the most at stake when it comes to policy decisions made today about our country’s fiscal and economic future, and it’s up to us to come together and speak up.

Launched in 2012, Up to Us is a rapidly growing, nonpartisan movement of young people who recognize that when it comes to securing their future opportunities, they have no better advocates than themselves. Amid high-profile debates over jobs and the economy, social mobility, healthcare, and tax reform, Up to Us is the only nationwide, campus-based campaign focused on building a sustainable economic and fiscal future for America’s next generation. This unique program provides emerging leaders a platform for facilitating a collaborative dialogue on the country’s most vexing challenges.

WHAT IS A CIVIC DINNER?

Civic-Dinners_about-22.png

A Civic Dinner is a conversation over dinner, with a host, 6-10 guests, three big questions, with equal time to share and one voice at a time. The questions are provided to the host in advance and a follow-up email is automatically sent to all guests and hosts that help collect key insights from the dinner.

WHO ARE YOU?

HOST A CIVIC DINNER

Gather 6-10 friends, peers, colleagues and neighbors for dinner for a conversation exploring how we build a sustainable economic and fiscal future.

YOUR ROLE AS A HOST

Civic Dinners makes organizing your dinner easy.

Simply go civicdinners.com/NationalDebt101 click "Host a Dinner" and add your specific dinner details to create a custom dinner page to send to your guests to register for your dinner. All information regarding the conversation is automatically set, including email reminders and follow-ups sent to all guests and you as the host. Here are some things to keep in mind.

1) Plan your dinner

  • Choose a date and location.

  • You can host either in your dining hall, home, or at a local restaurant, as long as it is a quiet space for 6-10 guests.

  • Decide on max capacity (best to keep to 6 if hosting at a restaurant).

  • Decide if you’d like it to be potluck or if you’d like to provide the food and ask people to pitch in.

  • Remember there is no responsibility for the host to cover the total cost of the dinner.

  • Everyone pays for their own meal or brings a dish if it is potluck, so there is no cost burden on the host.

2) Post your dinner

  • Go to civicdinners.com/NationalDebt101 and click “Host a Dinner” to setup your dinner.

  • Follow the simple guide to select the date, time, location, max guests.

  • Dinners can be set to "open" where anyone can register or "host approval" where guests fill out more information about themselves and the host must approve guests before any confirmation is sent.

  • Upon completion you will have a branded dinner page with a unique URL you can share.

  • You’ll also receive a confirmation email with a link to download the host guide.

  • The Host Guide includes all prompts and questions that guide the conversation so you can sit back, relax and listen.

3) Spread the word and manage your guests

  • Invite friends or guests and share via Facebook through your dinner page.

  • Civic Dinners are designed to be inclusive, so hosts are encouraged to invite diverse voices to the table to enable a robust conversation.

  • Or leave it open on the platform and be open to people you may not know attending your dinner.

  • Track guests who have registered for your dinner through email or your dinner page.

  • All communications and reminders are automatically set through CivicDinners.com.

  • View the marketing guide below with sample messaging and images to share.

4) Enjoy your dinner and tell us about it!

  • Simply follow the host guide sent via email or follow the host guide card in the host kit.

  • Follow the Civic Dinner guidelines of one voice at a time, with equal time to share.

  • Make sure to take a photo of the dinner and capture any memorable quotes to share on social media.

  • Remember to post photos and share your experience on social media tagging @CivicDinners and #NationalDebt101  #UptoUs

  • Encourage your guests to host their own Civic Dinner and keep the conversation going.

  • After the dinner, Civic Dinners will follow up with guests with a survey link to share their reflections, ideas and feedback.
